Sex & Plastic Surgery?

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

plastic surgery chicagoNo, this is not about Christian Troy on the show “Nip/Tuck”.  Recently, there was an article published in a respected peer reviewed publication, the Aesthetic Surgery Journal1 that reported the results of a study focusing on the effects of cosmetic surgery on intimacy and sexual relationships. I have always known that the basic reason my patients undergo plastic surgery is to improve a certain part of their body and feel better about themselves. This article goes on to say that this newfound sense of well-being can lead to a higher level of comfort in intimate settings and greater satisfaction in sexual relationships. The results are interesting to read and have available in your memory bank for your next cocktail party. According to the report, more than 95% of respondents reported improvement in their body image. The patients who underwent breast and body contouring surgery declared improvement in sexual satisfaction, and made changes toward a decidedly more provocative style in clothing.  To top it off, 70% of that group testified that their partner’s sex life had been enhanced – particularly if the surgery was on the breasts, abdomen and thighs. The study concluded that cosmetic surgery patients overwhelmingly feel better about their body after surgery. It is clear that the effect of cosmetic surgery extends well beyond the arena of just physical changes—and reaches into the bedroom.

Who is in a Plastic Surgeon’s Operating Room?

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

The operating room is very organized in its function and everyone has a specific duty. The whole team is responsible for your care. Typically there are five people in the room at any one time. The Chicago Plastic surgeon, anesthesiologist, scrub nurse/technician, and circulating nurse. The scrub nurse/technician is the individual who helps with instruments, assists the surgeon during the surgery, and is “scrubbed in” so he or she can not move around the room. The circulating nurse is not “scrubbed in” and can move around the room to help with other tasks throughout the surgery. You may ask who is the fifth person? The most important person in the room is the fifth person – the patient. So while you are asleep, many people work to ensure your safety and comfort.

Interested in a Tummy Tuck with a Chicago Plastic Surgeon?

A flat, well-toned abdomen is something that most of us strive for at the gym.  Sometimes, regardless of appropriate diet and exercise, we cannot reach our goals. Even people that are close to their ideal body weight can develop a protruding abdomen with loose and sagging skin.  The most common causes are heredity, pregnancy, prior surgery, significant weight fluctuations or even congenital spine abnormalities that affect posture.

There are many techniques available for abdominal contouring.  Liposuction, for example, is used when localized fat is the cause. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, may be the answer to a tighter, flatter abdomen when excess fat is combined with loose, sagging skin.  Also, abdominal muscles that have weakened or separated, called diastasis, can also be corrected at the time of a tummy tuck.  In addition, Chicago women who have undergone a c-section may often have their scar revised at the same time.  This will give the abdomen a profile that is smoother and firmer, which can often enhance body image and confidence.

A tummy tuck in Chicago is not a substitute for appropriate diet and exercise.  A great outcome can be diminished by significant weight fluctuations.  If you are planning substantial weight loss or considering pregnancy, it may be advisable to postpone your surgery.  Abdominoplasty is ideal for adults of any age who are in good health, stable in their weight, moderately fit and have realistic expectations for the outcome.

Men & Plastic Surgery

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Plastic surgery has traditionally been thought of something “women have”.  However, as we all live longer and quality of life becomes increasingly important, more men are seeking services that will make them look and feel younger. In recent years, cosmetic surgery in Chicago has become more accepted and common among men of all ages and walks of life. Factors contributing to the rise of plastic surgery for men are increased awareness of cosmetic surgery, increased medical decision making (a noted shift from women making healthcare decisions), and the intense competition in the business world. Greater than 1.2 million men underwent plastic surgery in 2008.

Men have plastic surgery in Chicago for many of the same reasons as women, to gain confidence, self-esteem, and a healthy sense of pride in their appearance. While men may be motivated by the same factors as women, their bodies, goals and temperaments are unique.  Men have distinctive needs before and after surgery.  And, while cosmetic surgery in men uses many of the same procedures as in women, there are special considerations for men.  For example, the skin in men is thicker, and the facial area contains hair.  It is such differences that require special consideration.  In general, men are seeking procedures that will give them a balanced nose, a more youthful face, and a trimmer, more athletic waistline.

The trend for men to seek to plastic surgery is expected to continue as the desire to enhance their appearance and lifestyle increases.

Body Contouring After Massive Weight Loss

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

It is estimated that as many as nine million people in the United States suffer from morbid obesity. The associated medical conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes can be compounded by psychosocial incapacity. Improvements in the surgical correction of morbid obesity via gastric bypass procedures and non-surgical diet regimens have allowed increasing numbers of morbidly obese patients to undergo successful and sustained massive weight loss. While the medical/health benefits are obvious, different problems may arise as a result.

Massive weight loss can lead to extensive redundancy of skin and fat folds in different areas of the body causing functional problems such as skin infection and chronic irritation from constant rubbing together. These areas include upper arms, breasts (male and female), and abdomen and medial thighs. Patients also complain of difficulty fitting into clothing, interference with personal hygiene and daily activities as well as the potential for psychosocial concerns of a disfigured appearance.

Many plastic surgery procedures are available to correct such problems after massive weight loss.  They include arm lift or brachioplasty, breast lift or mastopexy, panniculectomy or removal of excess abdominal skin and fat, as well as thigh lift.  These procedures not only help patients achieve a more normal appearance after massive weight loss, but also allow them to complete their journey to a healthier lifestyle and accomplish the extreme makeover that will change their lives forever.  Body Contouring After Massive Weight Loss

Thinking of a Mommy Makeover in Chicago?

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

mommy makeover chicagoHaving a career in Chicago, raising children, being a wife and mom – women do it all. However, these achievements can take a toll on your body, especially pregnancy. As a result, “Mommy Makeovers” have become more popular. Women already account for 87 percent of plastic surgery patients based on statistics reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Increasingly they are saying, “I just want my pre-baby body back”. Below I will discuss the most common areas that our patients are concerned about.

Remember those long restless nights with your newborn? Well, they can accelerate the aging of your eyes. Other Chicago people may say, “You look tired.” – even though you just had one of those rare uninterrupted nights of sleep. Something as simple as Botox for your frown lines or crow’s feet can make you look well rested and refreshed. It only takes a few minutes and lasts for 4-5months on average. Eyelift surgery can permanently remove the sagging skin of your upper eyelids or the bags under your lower eyelids and give you a more youthful look.

Can’t forget the effects of breast feeding. Some women like the size and fullness of their breasts while breast feeding. Afterwards, however, they complain of sagging and loss of fullness. A breast augmentation with saline or silicone gel filled breast implants, a breast lift, or a combination of the two can help you regain the shape, fullness and size of your breasts. On the other hand, some women require a breast reduction after breast feeding due to the heaviness of their breasts, which can cause back and neck pain.

And of course, the tummy where it all started. A very common complaint of mothers is related to the post-baby “pooch”. Weight gained during pregnancy can be resolved through diet and exercise, but the stretched abdominal muscle and skin is most commonly corrected by an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck. The surgery removes the excess skin and fatty tissue while tightening the rectus abdominus muscle (your six-pack muscle). This will give your abdomen a flatter appearance and make many women feel more comfortable and confident in their clothing & bathing suits.

Sometimes after having children fat redistributes to unwanted areas such as the flanks, hips and thighs. These localized areas of fatty collection are often resistant to diet and exercise and persist even after your weight has returned to pre-baby levels. Liposuction is the ideal tool for contouring the areas of unwanted fat. It has minimal scarring and minimal recovery with most patients returning to work and driving the kids around within 48 hours.

Having a family is wonderful and the trade-offs are absolutely worth it (easy for me to say as I did not bear the children). As we are all living longer and with better quality of life, women are frequently saying “I would just like this area to look like it did before children”.  Most of our patients are moms and we hear these concerns on a daily basis.  As always, please let us know your thoughts.

Liposuction vs. Tummy tuck – What is the difference?

Friday, June 12th, 2009

liposuction chicagoA Chicago tummy tuck addresses three areas – skin, fat and muscle. Liposuction in Chicago only addresses the fat and relies on your skin to shrink independently after the surgery and does not address the muscle at all. For liposuction you should have good skin tone and no looseness to the muscle covering or fascia of your abdominal muscle called the rectus abdominus muscle. In general – a tummy tuck is performed for patients after pregnancy or extreme weight fluctuations such as after gastric bypass. Liposuction is typcially indicated for patients who just have a localized area of fatty deposit that is resistant to diet and exercise. A comprehensive consultation including a complete exam is the best way to determine your needs with a Chicago Board Certified plastic surgeon.
